Signs Your Air Ducts Need Cleaned
Dust doesn’t need to be blowing out of the HVAC system for cleaning to be necessary. Common signs include:
- Dirty vent covers;
- Excessive dust in the home;
- A spike in heating and/or cooling bills; and
- The indoor temperature and/or air flow varies throughout the home
Dust and particulate matter that accumulate inside air ducts can pose a fire hazard if exposed to an ignition source. Also, clogs can form and build back into other parts of the HVAC system, including mechanical parts and cause issues. But a larger issue from not cleaning is a lack of indoor air quality, which can affect your health and others living in the home.
Ducts & Indoor Air Quality
We often spend much more time in our homes than we realize. During that time, we’re exposed to what is blown from our HVAC system, including dust, mold spores, pollen and more. These minute particles can cause allergies, asthma, respiratory infections, and other health issues for people sensitive to allergens. Having the air ducts cleaned every few years can reduce the risk of exposure to allergens, though not completely. An HVAC duct cleaning company such as Hoveln Heating & Cooling, Inc. can assess your home and give up-to-date information on the indoor air quality.
Ducts & Your HVAC System
Air ducts are an integral part of a home’s HVAC system. This series of tubes, or pipes, and vents carry and distribute heated or cooled air to various parts of your home. This same air is then circulated, or returned, via the air ducts and re-used. Normal air ducts lose up to 40 percent of heating and cooling energy, forcing the HVAC system to work harder to compensate.
The supply side of the system brings the heated or cooled air to the home through individual registers. Air is then drawn back into the system by the return side, moving through the air handler to be conditioned again.
